PARAMUS, N.J. - Hunter Mahan knew he was on the verge of something special, even with a record that looked ordinary by his standards. He had gone nearly 30 months and 48 tournaments worldwide without winning. He was No. 62 in the FedEx Cup, with no guarantee of lasting more than two tournaments. He finished 25th in the Ryder Cup standings and was not even part of the conversation as a potential wild-card pick. He felt great about how he was playing. The hard part was to stay calm with his emotions, his swing and his game and to "just let everything happen." "And it did," he said. "And obviously I made some huge putts coming down the stretch." In a traffic jam of contenders Sunday at The Barclays, Mahan pulled away with five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on the back nine at Ridgewood, including three in a row late in the final round that sealed the win. With a bogey he could afford — though he could have done without the drama until he made an 8-foot bogey putt — Mahan closed with a 6-under 65 for a 14-under-270 total and a two-shot victory in the opening playoff event for the FedEx Cup. He won by two shots over Jason Day, who couldnt manage anything but pars over the last four holes and shot 68; Stuart Appleby, who had to scramble for par on the last two holes for a 65; and Cameron Tringale, who made bogey from the trees on the final hole for a 66. It was the sixth career win for Mahan, which includes a pair of World Golf Championships, though this might have surpassed considering what was at stake. It had been since the Shell Houston Open in the spring of 2012 since he had won. It assures that he will play all four playoff events for the eighth straight year, and it guarantees him a clear shot at the $10 million bonus when the FedEx Cup ends at East Lake with the Tour Championship. And it was sure to get the attention of Tom Watson, the U.S. captain who makes his three Ryder Cup picks in eight days. Watson has said he was looking for heart, and Mahan showed plenty of that on a day in which six players had at least a share of the lead. "A win helps a lot," Mahan said. "I have no idea what hes thinking or if he has any sort of strategy. But I think a win is a good step in the right direction." The first playoff event was filled with winners and losers: MAHANS MOVE: Mahan is the only player to have never missed a FedEx Cup playoff event since this series began in 2007. That was in jeopardy until he won Sunday and moved to the top of the standings. Mahan, Phil Mickelson and Steve Stricker are the only players to reach the Tour Championship every year. Stricker was eliminated from the playoffs by withdrawing from The Barclays with a hip injury. Mickelson missed the 54-hole cut and is now No. 57. Only the top 30 reach the Tour Championship. SILVER MEDALS: Tringale had never finished better than third in his brief PGA Tour career, and this was an ideal time to finish second. Because points are five times the value in the playoffs, being part of a three-way tie for second moved him from No. 61 to No. 10. That all but assures him of advancing to the Tour Championship, which gets Tringale into the first three majors — including his first trip to the Masters. Appleby goes from No. 98 to No. 19 and has a reasonable chance of getting to the Tour Championship. He has not played any major since the 2011 Masters. OGILVY TO BOSTON: The top 100 advance to the next round of the FedEx Cup playoffs at the TPC Boston. Geoff Ogilvy was No. 90 and missed the cut, and it looked as though his season would be over. But a peculiar chain-reaction of events sends him to the Deutsche Bank Championship. Troy Merritt could have bumped Ogilvy out of the top 100 until he missed a 10-foot par putt on the 18th hole. Merritt still had a chance to pick up a few more points depending on two other players — a bogey by Jerry Kelly or Brendon Todd. Kelly nearly holed out from off the green at No. 18 and saved par, and Todd made a 15-foot par putt on the last hole. Ogilvy finished at No. 100 by two points over Merritt. FURYKS HOPES: Jim Furyk was tied for the lead going into the final round. He didnt convert enough birdies and didnt save enough pars and shot 70 to finish eighth. Furyk now is 0-for-8 with at least a share of the 54-hole lead since his last victory in the 2010 Tour Championship. "Its golf," Furyk said. "I didnt die out there today. I dont expect anyone to feel sorry for me. Ive played great this year. Ive played very good this year — I wont say great because I havent won." THE TROPHY: Mahan was posing for the trophy with his biggest fan, David Finn, who has a disorder in his limbs that keeps him in a wheelchair and unable to speak. When he went to leave, he picked the crystal up by its top and it broke off at the bottom. It was the only thing that went wrong for him Sunday. And the trophy can be replaced. Jordan From China . The 55th-ranked Istomin saved 11 of 14 break points to win in just over two hours, setting up a second round meeting with Australian Marinko Matosevic. Gasquet next plays third-seeded Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, who won had 18 aces in a 6-2, 6-4 win against seventh-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France. Yeezy From China .DeMarco Murray got his 20th carry late in the fourth quarter with a 10-point lead, not long after Dez Bryant made his final catch of the day.Sure enough, a 44-17 win over Washington didnt change Dallas post-season position.CINCINNATI - When Andy Dalton is on the sideline Monday night, hell make sure to steal a few glances at the field to check out his counterpart.Who doesnt want to watch Peyton Manning do his thing in prime time?Yeah, growing up I was watching Peyton play, so its fun to be able to go up against these guys, Dalton said. You definitely want to watch what theyre doing, see how they play, because hes a guy that has been one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game. The quarterbacks will get a lot of the attention — Manning for his perfect career mark against Cincinnati, Dalton for his penchant to melt down in big games — when the Broncos play the Bengals on Monday night. But itll be the running backs who are on the spot in a game between teams trying to set themselves up for deep playoff runs.If the Broncos (11-3) and Bengals (9-4-1) get their way, itll be C.J. Anderson and Jeremy Hill getting most of the attention. Both teams have started putting more emphasis on the run as the playoffs approach. The Broncos have already won the AFC West and would clinch a first-round bye with a victory at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals would earn a fourth straight trip to the playoffs with a win.The formula to win a championship this time of the season is teams that can run the ball and play good defence, Broncos nose tackle Terrance Knighton said.Yeah, they all say that. In this case — for this game in particular — its pertinent.Manning is 8-0 against the Bengals, but hes not in the best of health. Manning played with the flu and strained his right thigh during a 22-10 win at San Diego last Sunday. He was limited in practice during the week.Well see how the rest of the week goes and when (Monday) comes around, well see how he feels, offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase said on Friday. So it would be beneficial to get another big game out of Anderson, who led all NFL players wiith 709 total yards in November and had back-to-back games rushing for 167 and 168 yards.dddddddddddd Hes in good shape heading into the Monday night game.Bodys feeling fine, Im great, Anderson said. Its that time of the year where teams want to run the ball and teams want to play defence and we can still throw the ball, which is great because we have No. 18 back there.Dalton is healthy, but the Bengals are looking to make him more of a role player in their third prime-time game of the season. Daltons worst moments have come in the playoffs (0-3) and prime time (2-6). The Bengals got blown out by New England and Cleveland in their two prime-time games this season.Hill leads all NFL rookies with 877 yards rushing. He ran for 148 yards during a 30-0 win at Cleveland last week, making him the first rookie since Tampa Bays Cadillac Williams in 2005 to have three games of rushing for more than 140 yards. The second-round pick from LSU likes to celebrate touchdowns distinctively. After a score in Cleveland on Sunday, he tried to jump into the Dawg Pound but got pushed away by two fans.I like to have a lot of intensity, man, Hill said. Its just bringing a lot of passion and intensity to the game and just running hard. Try to (energize) my teammates and get those guys going. I like to have fun out there, as well. The Bengals ran for a season-high 244 yards in Cleveland, an indication that their running game is finally rounding into form. Its been a long process, but I think were getting there, offensive co-ordinator Hue Jackson said. Do I think were there yet? No. You guys will know when were there because everybody will feel it and see it. I saw a glimpse of it a week ago and weve just got to keep at it.___AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Stapleton in Denver contributed to this report.___Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ' ' '
