OTTAWA - Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk says he has no reason to feel embarrassed about his teams lack of spending.Ottawas payroll of US$55,804,597 is the lowest in the NHL leaving them plenty of room to spend, but dont expect Melnyk to open his wallet any time soon.Im not the least embarrassed about us spending at the bottom, Melnyk said Monday afternoon at his 11th annual charity skate for kids. Im happy about it because well be able to spend more in the future and some cant. Some are stuck. That being said, Melnyk is in no rush to increase his teams payroll despite his teams current position outside the playoff picture. The Senators are 11th in the Eastern Conference at 12-12-5 and would need to make some significant improvements to move into the top eight.Melnyk said he and general manager Bryan Murray spoke as recently as Monday morning. Were not in any way restricted, said Melnyk. (Murray) has not come back to me and he said theres nothing out there that he could actually spend money on.Thats not to say the Senators arent prepared to increase their payroll. With a number of players facing restricted free agency this summer Melnyk says they wont have any choice but to spend. For now, however, it appears the Senators will wait and see if its recent coaching change has any impact on the teams fortunes. The Senators fired head coach Paul MacLean last week and promoted Dave Cameron, who had been an assistant, to take over the coaching duties. Many assumed Cameron was Melnyks choice seeing as the two share a long history.Lets get this straight once and for all, Melnyk said. (Murray) makes the decisions. I stay out of the hockey operations, because otherwise if I get myself involved in that then I cant come out and point the finger at anybody.Melnyk said he was consulted on the decision to fire MacLean, but left the final decision up to Murray.I just let him do his thing, Melnyk said.Melnyk and Cameron have known each other since 2001, when Melnyk purchased the OHLs Toronto St. Michaels Majors while Cameron was the teams head coach.I think hes going to do great otherwise I dont think he would have been selected as being the next coach, Melnyk said. Hes patient, hes a hard worker, not to say Paul wasnt a hard worker — he was. If you add together hard work and I think a great attitude and the respect of the dressing room all together I think hell do well.Melnyk also addressed the possibility of building a new arena closer to Ottawas downtown core. The National Capital Commission launched a request for proposals to redevelop as much as 21.4 hectares of land at LeBreton Flats, a few blocks west of Parliament Hill. One criteria for the redevelopment proposal is the inclusion of an attraction of a regional, national or international significance that is also a world-class capital destination. Its very premature even to talk about this as we havent even decided were going to do this, said Melnyk. Theres a request for qualification and we havent submitted one yet, we have until Jan. 7, but if were going to do it we want to do it right. We want to be organized, we want to make sure that this has been very carefully thought through.Melnyk says should the organization decide to submit a proposal it would likely happen before Christmas. We want to do whats right for the city, for the fans, for the organization long term, said Melnyk. Thats the way I think, long term. Its not what happens this year, the year after, its what happens over the next 20 years from now.Melnyk also commented on the outbreak of mumps across the league. Its bizarre, he said. It could be serious if it gets through a dressing room and you could get five, six guys sitting on the sidelines so I think every team should be taking it seriously and we certainly do. Coach Mike Babcock wanted each player to know what it would take to make the team, but its up to general manager Steve Yzerman and his staff to start evaluating once the regular season gets underway. "The final scouting for the management group to put the final roster together begins immediately," Yzerman said. Thats a lot of pressure all around, when the expectation in Canada is nothing short of a gold medal. Team Canadas management group has a representative from every division -- the Boston Bruins Peter Chiarelli, the Detroit Red Wings Ken Holland, the St. Louis Blues Doug Armstrong and the Edmonton Oilers Kevin Lowe -- so the spotlight will be bright. "I think its going to be on your mind fairly often, whether youre being asked about it or youre playing against guys who were at the camp, its going to come up," Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby said. "Its always in the back of your mind, but I think if you just focus on playing well for your own team and making sure you have a good first half, then everything kind of takes care of itself." In the immediate future, players return to their preparations for training camp. Canadas coaches and front-office personnel have jobs to do as well, but theyll stay in touch regularly, mostly on conference calls. "Well arrange our schedule over the next week or so to get ready for the start of the regular season," Yzerman said Tuesday evening. "Well get together as a group early November to narrow things down a little bit and talk about what were seeing and make sure were all in constant communication and get organized from November to mid-December and make our final decisions at that point." The focus will be on monitoring the 47 players invited to camp, even though anyone can work his way into the Olymppic conversation with a strong enough start.dddddddddddd Yzerman doesnt consider anyone who was in Calgary a "long shot." "Well keep an eye on everybody but focus on particular teams, particular games, particular players that were deciding on," he said. "There was a few guys we dont feel the need to watch. But we know what they can do and theyre going to be on this team, assuming theyre healthy." Yzerman estimated that, conservatively, there were eight or nine locks to make it. Crosby, Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews and defenceman Duncan Keith, Nashville Predators captain Shea Weber, Los Angeles Kings defenceman Drew Doughty, Tampa Bay Lightning centre Steven Stamkos, Boston Bruins centre Patrice Bergeron, New York Islanders centre John Tavares and New York Rangers winger Rick Nash seem to fit that bill. Putting together the rest of the roster could be a painstaking process, considering Canadas depth. Weber wants no part of that. "Thats why Im the player, theres too many tough decisions," he said. "You go down the list and everybody deserves the chance. Thats why theyre here. Theres even guys that arent here that probably will get a good look during the season. Were very fortunate in Canada to have a big selection, but definitely some tough choices." Yzerman expects to have the roster figured out by mid-to-late December. The deadline for all countries to submit is Dec. 31. Between now and then, plenty could change Team Canadas potential makeup. "Theres a lot of could-bes, but I think the first half of the year just has such an impact on whos on the team," Crosby said. "Im sure theres some guys in mind, but therell be guys who have standout first halves, and will make it tough not to be selected. So I think were going to see here in the first half who really shows they want to be part of it." ' ' '
