SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers are competing for their playoff lives with two games to go, slim as those chances might be.Surprisingly, the San Francisco 49ers find themselves playing only to finish on a strong note — not for another deep post-season run they had become so used to in the first three years under embattled coach Jim Harbaugh. It will be a little strange, indeed, for San Francisco with nothing at stake Saturday night on its home field. Not that Rivers expects Harbaughs team to back down one bit at this stage despite the uncomfortable circumstances and constant, swirling questions about Harbaughs future with one season remaining on his $25 million, five-year contract. This is a team we respect a lot. Theyve been to three championship games and theres lots of reasons why maybe this year didnt turn out, Rivers said. Its a late game in December with one week to go. Two teams are in different circumstances, but both have a lot of prideful guys and guys who are going to give everything. It will be a playoff-type intensity type of game. The Chargers (8-6) are in a closing stretch that included a win at Baltimore and home losses to New England and Denver. Theyve gone from controlling their own destiny in the wild-card race to needing to win at San Francisco and at Kansas City, plus to get some help.San Francisco (7-7) has its first three-game losing streak during Harbaughs tenure, with two of those coming at the hands of the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in an 18-day span. Now, the Niners are playing for a winning season.Theres a lot at stake. Thats the way we approach it, Harbaugh said. Here are some other things to watch for Saturday at Levis Stadium:BANGED-UP CHARGERS: Rivers sat out practice Wednesday, apparently to rest chest and back injuries. He said he anticipates starting Saturday night. He would be down one of his favourite options, Keenan Allen, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a broken right collarbone. In addition, inside linebacker Donald Butler went on IR on Monday with a dislocated left elbow.Defensive tackle Corey Liuget said the Chargers need to learn from the losses and move on fast.We always know we can play with the best of them, but in order to be the best, to be considered one of the top three to five teams in the NFL, youve got to beat the best and we didnt prove that the last two weeks, he said.KAEPERNICK PUSHES ON: Despite the disappointment this year, Colin Kaepernick would like to give San Francisco any possible momentum to take into the off-season.Everybody thought these 49ers would be playing well into January. His subpar season has been key in the results.I think thats what everyones expectation was, including ours, Kaepernick said. You dont play this game for any other reason than to try to win a Super Bowl. And its disappointing that were not going to be able to accomplish that this year, but we have to keep moving forward.WILL GORE GO?: Midweek, 49ers running back Frank Gore declared himself symptom-free from a concussion suffered last Sunday at Seattle and Harbaugh expects him to play. In what could be his final two weeks with the 49ers, Gore needs 196 yards rushing for his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season and eighth in his 10 NFL seasons.CHARGERS OFFENSE: The Chargers scored only one offensive touchdown in each of their past two games.San Diego could be without running back Ryan Mathews for a second straight game due to an ankle injury. Without their running game, Rivers is more vulnerable. You definitely want to come out and play your best ball, wide receiver Eddie Royal said. You want to make a statement and win those games, especially at home. That didnt happen, but it didnt take away from the type of team and type of players we know we have.San Diegos defence has played well lately, but the offence has dragged down the team.If you play red-area defence the way our defence was playing the last couple of games we should win these games, coach Mike McCoy said. But its a team game.NO MORE MCDONALD: The 49ers released defensive lineman Ray McDonald on Wednesday amid a sexual assault investigation by San Jose police only a month after the Santa Clara County district attorneys office decided not to file charges against him in a domestic violence case. His dismissal leaves a void on what has been one of the NFLs best front seven units in recent years. What I can tell you is I was extremely disappointed, as all of us were, to hear about the latest allegations, general manager Trent Baalke said.___AP Sports Writer Bernie Wilson in San Diego contributed to this report.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLNike Air Max 270 React Pas Cher . -- Andrew Wiggins is from Canada, Wayne Selden from Massachusetts and Joel Embiid from the African nation of Cameroon. The thinking at the time was Clowney could have already been promised he would be selected first overall by the Houston Texans, therefore negating any need to meet with any other teams. The plot took another twist this week.Pressed for time, we simply took last years Dallas Cowboys preview, changed a few minor players around, and posted it fresh as this years. Only joking of course, but we certainly could have. Not a lot has changed in Jerry World, and thats not just from last year till now; the Cowboys have been incredibly consistent and incredibly mediocre the past five-plus seasons. Now, they do have one 11-5 year, in which they made the playoffs before bowing out in incredible Cowboy fashion, and they do have one year where their record dipped to 6-10, but for the last three years the Cowboys have played straight down the middle, 8-8 football. Theres reason for optimism heading into the regular season, but its the same points of emphasis from years past. Tony Romo will likely still put up an above average season, but can he shake the notion that his performances always look better on the stat sheet than they did on the field? DeMarco Murray will start the season looking like one of the best running backs in the league again. But can he stay healthy for a full 16 games. And Dez Bryant will continue to look great, maybe even better than last year, but will it be enough to make a difference? If the Romo-led Dallas offence can be as potent as owner Jerry Jones thinks it can, there will be few excuses this year. First round pick Zack Martin joins a stout offensive line anchored by newly super-rich left tackle Tyron Smith, and former St. Louis Rams head coach Scott Linehan, who has spent the past four seasons coaching Calvin Johnson in Detroit, is signed on as offensive coordinator. "Scott is a really gifted play-caller," Romo said of his new OC to ESPN. "He has a great mind for the game. We will talk for hours sometimes. We can talk ten minutes and nine minutes [and] we are going over stuff and one minute touch on something that someone learns and maybe we will take something that helps the whole thing. Its small but its huge to us and I think that is a great connection." The few roster changes the Cowboys did undertake this off-season were on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive linemen DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher were lost in free aagency, replaced by DeMarcus Lawrence and Henry Melton.dddddddddddd While that may look like a loss on paper, the Cowboys defence was perhaps the leagues worst last season, so at the very least the changes make them younger. What will hurt more is the loss of middle linebacker Sean Lee, who tore his ACL during OTAs this off-season and is already lost for the year. With the teams defensive ineptitude, its surprising the Cowboys even carried on their 8-8 streak last year. And while the defence cant possibly be as bad this coming season, the switch in defensive coordinators from Monte Kiffin to Rod Marinelli will help, they still dont figure to be great – or even pretty good – so the offence is going to have to be extra special for Dallas to finish with a winning record. Thats a lot of pressure that Romo, up until now at least, hasnt proven he can handle very well. Notes A lot of what the Cowboys hope to accomplish is predicated on Romo making a full recovery from back surgery. Romo was eased back into action at training camp but the Cowboys are seemingly confident hell be ready to go with just Brandon Weeden and Caleb Hannie behind Romo on the depth chart after Kyle Ortons release. Theres no question Sean Lee is a leader and impact player on defence for the Cowboys when hes healthy and on the field, but thats becoming a rarer and rarer occasion. After missing five games last year and 10 the year before, Lee will miss the entire season after injuring his knee in off-season activities. Lees potential replacement is no leader. The Cowboys made a surprising move in trading for former Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens bust Rolando McClai, who first had to be reinstated after retiring from the league. McClain has done work to get his personal life back on track, but he was never very good on the field. The Cowboys surprised many when they passed on Johnny Manziel, who Jerry Jones was reportedly enamored with, in favour of beefing up their already strong offensive line with Notre Dame tackle Zack Martin. Second-rounder DeMarcus Lawrence will be given the tall task of replacing DeMarcus Wares production on the defensive line. ' ' '
