MIAMI -- When the Miami Marlins went deep into their bench during an eighth-inning rally Thursday, infielder Casey McGehee was told to be on standby as the emergency catcher. He made sure the game didnt come to that. McGehee hit a two-out, two-run single to cap a four-run eighth for the Marlins, who flexed their newfound offensive muscle yet again to beat the Colorado Rockies 8-5. The Marlins scored 27 runs while winning three of four games in the season-opening series. It took them 14 games to score 27 runs last year, when they finished last in the majors in runs and batting and lost 100 games. Newcomer McGehee has led the resurgence, batting .462 with eight RBIs after spending last year in Japan. Giancarlo Stanton, who singled home the go-ahead run with two outs in the eighth, is batting .375 with seven RBIs. "Its definitely different than what were used to," Stanton said. "It has been fun. Were having a good time." They looked like the same old Marlins for much of the afternoon by going 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position before Christian Yelich made the score 5-all in the eighth with a two-out RBI bloop single off Matt Belisle (0-1). Yelich stole second -- with the call confirmed by a replay review -- and Jeff Baker walked. Yelich scored easily when Stanton singled after falling behind 0-2, and McGehee followed with a two-run single. "Was it perfect? No," manager Mike Redmond said. "But we got some big hits when we needed them." The Marlins used two pinch hitters in the inning, which left them without a catcher on the bench. Redmond told McGehee to be ready, mindful he has some experience as a catcher, most recently in 2008 in Triple-A. "I actually kind of want to get back there again, but maybe not in a close game," McGehee said. "Maybe when were up 15." While he might have reservations about donning a mask, he has brought a hard-nose attitude to the once-meek Marlins. He broke up a double play to help score a run and came home from second on a two-out grounder that Marcell Ozuna beat out for a hit. "Thats the kind of style were wanting to play -- aggressive, put pressure on them, kind of the old football mentality of play until the whistle," McGehee said. McGehees teammates love it. "For him to do what hes doing, it wreaks havoc with the pitcher," Stanton said. A.J. Ramos (1-0) pitched a perfect eighth. Steve Cishek followed with a scoreless ninth for his 31st consecutive converted save opportunity, and his second this year. Franklin Morales allowed three runs in 5 1-3 innings for Colorado. Miami starter Jacob Turner gave up five runs in six innings. Miami will remain home this week against San Diego, while the Rockies head to Denver for their home opener Friday against Arizona, hoping to reverse their slow start. "Its definitely not how you write it up," Michael Cuddyer said. "Now weve got to look at the Diamondbacks and win that series and get right back where we need to be." Cuddyer homered and drove in three runs. Last years NL batting champion is hitting .412. NOTES: Two calls were upheld after replay reviews that took 2 1/2 minutes and 75 seconds. ... Pedroia reached the milestone with a little panache, hitting a grand slam in the sixth inning and propelling the Boston Red Sox to a 7-1 win over the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.BOSTON -- The Seattle Mariners have scored in only two innings the past two days, and thats still been enough to beat slumping Boston. Dustin Ackleys three-run homer capped a seven-run fourth inning that carried the Mariners to a 7-3 win Saturday, sending the Red Sox to their seventh straight loss. After rallying against closer Koji Uehara for five runs in the ninth and a 5-3 victory Friday night, the Mariners broke loose just once again Saturday en route to their ninth win in 12 games. "I dont care how we get them as long as we get them," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "That was nice, to bounce back like that." The victory increased Seattles slim lead over Detroit for the second AL wild card. Ackley was prepared for Brandon Workman after earning a 12-pitch walk his first time up. "That first at-bat was huge, kind of seeing everything," Ackley said. "He threw me everything he had. Changeup, curveball, cutter, fastball. That was a good at-bat, that first at-bat. It gave me a gauge for the rest of my at-bats against him." Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, the Mariners chased Workman (1-8) with their big inning. Chris Denorfia had an RBI double, and Chris Taylor and Jesus Sucre added run-scoring singles before Ackley hooked a drive around the right-field foul pole. Workmans wild pitch allowed Denorfia to score the tying run. Boston designated hitter David Ortiz had his streak of reaching base four times in four straight games halted, but he did walk and was hit by a pitch before leaving with a bruised left elbow. Dustin Pedroia had a double and two singles for the Red Sox. Tom Wilhelmsen (2-2) struck out three in 1 1-3 innings of relief after starter Chris Young couldnt make it out of the fourth. Young gave up three runs on seven hits and five walks in 3 2-3 innings, his shortest start since his second of the season when he lasted just three innings at Miami. Workman lost his seventh consecutive start, getting tagged for seven runs and 10 hits in 3 1-3 innings. "He gets through the first three innings in good shape," Boston manager John Farrell said. "In the fourth inning where things started to slip away from him, he still pitched ahead in the count, and unfortunately was unable to put a number of hiitters away.dddddddddddd" Workman didnt feel good from the start. "The ball was up all day for me," he said. "You cant pitch like that. You cant pitch everything belt high. Thats what I did today and they took advantage of it." Boston took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first three innings. David Ross had an RBI double for the Red Sox before getting ejected by first base umpire Vic Carapazza. HELPING HAND Seattle relievers came in leading the AL with a 2.43 ERA. They combined for 5 1-3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. "Obviously, the goal is to go as deep into the game as possible and turn it over to them, but theyve been unbelievable time and again when I turn it over to them," Young said. TRAINERS ROOM Mariners: The team hopes CF Michael Saunders (oblique strain) can resume his rehab assignment soon. It was halted Friday for a few days because he had flu-like symptoms. Red Sox: SS Xander Bogaerts was held out of the lineup after getting hit in the head by Felix Hernandezs pitch Friday night. "Anytime you get hit in the head -- like he did last night -- hes got to go through a protocol," Farrell said. "He will today just to see if theres any concussion symptoms." Farrell also said RHP Joe Kelly is in line to make his next start. Kelly left Fridays game after feeling slight discomfort in his shoulder. UP NEXT RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (12-6, 2.57 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Seattle in the series finale Sunday. Hes been hit hard by the Red Sox in three career starts, giving up 12 runs in 12 2-3 innings. RHP Allen Webster (3-1, 4.73) gets the ball for Boston. Hes given up three or fewer earned runs in four of his five starts this season. Ortiz was hit on the left elbow by Charlie Furbushs fastball, and Yoenis Cespedes had to get out of the way of Danny Farquhars high fastball in the sixth. BIG MOVE The Red Sox announced during the game that they signed Cuban defector Rusney Castillo to a seven-year contract, beginning in 2014.
